Mobile email: The benefits for your business and options available

Here are some of the benefits of mobile email for business

• Enables you to develop a competitive advantage.

• Employees are more productive whilst out of the office.

• Mobile email reduces backlogs from time out of the office.

• Customer satisfaction improves as employee responsiveness improves.

• Enables you to close deals sooner – important questions can be answered whilst on the move.

• The choice of where and when to work means employee satisfaction improves.

A common misconception is that Blackberry = Mobile Email.

That’s not the case. Blackberry is just one option but it seems to have become a generic term - like people saying Hoover instead of vacuum cleaner! As well as Blackberry there are other options available for email on the move.

For the purposes of this article it is assumed that readers have a server on site in their business.

Mobile email now works on a “push” technology meaning emails are pushed to the handset in real time, thus avoiding repeated checking and downloading of emails. That’s much more convenient.

The other key feature is mobile email can synchronise in real time whatever is on the email system in your workplace. As well as email this includes calendar, tasks and your address book.

If you have a server in your office, with a little bit of configuration work you’re probably ready to start using mobile email.

So what are the pros and cons of Blackberry and what else is available?

Blackberry Pros

• Some people like the user friendly handsets which facilitate keying of text.

• Blackberrys "drip feed" emails over a period of time. This can be useful if you are on a slow connection, perhaps whilst travelling.

Blackberry Cons

• You would need to use Blackberry Internet Service or Blackberry Enterprise Server instead of your existing server (eg. Microsoft Exchange).

• Cost.

Other handsets

• This is a matter of personal choice. Any Windows Mobile handset will support direct connection to most servers. Windows Mobile is the handset's operating system and many manufacturers have phones in their ranges which have it installed.

• Many Nokia phones also support mobile email.

• And of course the Apple IPhone is perfect for mobile email.

• The benefit here is all this is likely to be built into your server so you would not need to pay anything more other than additional charges for downloading emails.

Whichever route you go you need to make sure it is accounted for on your mobile plan otherwise you may receive an unexpected bill!
